Questo lavoro è in collaborazione con Chiara Arturo. Non siamo un duo, ma abbiamo deciso di lavorare insieme sullo stesso progetto.
E’ stato esposto nella mostra Vicinanze. Studi per un’idea di attraversamento a cura di Marcello di Masi presso la Off Gallery di Napoli, nella Selezione di Fotografia contemporanea della Heillandi Gallery di Lugano e nella mostra Les uns et les autres. A recomposed bolero alla galleria Primo Piano di Napoli, curata da Antonio Maiorino.
Vicinanze è un progetto nato dall’esigenza di confrontarsi per iniziare, in questo storico momento di chiusura, uno spazio di dialogo sul Mediterraneo come luogo di attraversamento. Le fotografie sono piccoli studi si porgono allo sguardo del fruitore in forma di dittico: sono le conversazioni per avviare una discussione sul confine, sono immagini che fungono da congiunzione. Il Mediterraneo è un mare tra le terre, che oggi ha perso la sua essenza come soglia: è passato dall’inclusione all’esclusione. Per noi rappresenta il punto di partenza, il grande bacino da cui è nata la nostra cultura, il nostro modo di vedere, sentire, percepire, vivere. È il fondamento di una cultura plurale, dove sono le nostre radici. Lavorare sul confine oggi – insieme – significa creare una connessione su un argomento che separa. Il tentativo è di invertire la lettura del Mediterraneo, come una cartografia in cui le rotte sono più importanti dei confini.

Proprio per questo abbiamo deciso di lavorare sulle vicinanze, per abbattere quelle linee politiche che creano distanza e manifestare la volontà di costruire relazioni. Creare dei dittici con il nostro lavoro per noi significa unirsi nelle differenze per rafforzarsi, aprirsi all’esterno per evolversi, dare valore a se stessi attraverso il confronto con l’altro. È questo che succede alle nostre foto, prendono forza unendosi, crescono di valore. Partiamo dunque da una fase di confronto e aprendo uno spazio di condivisione e lavorando nello stesso spazio cornice, facciamo nella nostra pratica dell’arte quello che vorremmo che succedesse nel Mediterraneo.
La nostra volontà è quella di continuare a lavorare su questo tema, esplorando altri luoghi del Mediterraneo in modo da avere noi per prime un punto di vista plurale sulla questione. Inoltre vorremmo coinvolgere altri artisti chiedendo loro di fare lo stesso, invitandoli ad aprire il dialogo tra loro ed attivare una riflessione condivisa, in modo che il Mediterraneo torni ad essere quel luogo di scambio favorevole alla nascita di nuove visioni.

Vicinanze is a project born from the need to confront each other in order to start, in this historical moment of closure, a dialogue space on the Mediterranean as a place of crossing. The photographs are small studies displayed in the form of diptychs: are conversations to start a discussion on the border, are images that act as a conjunction. The Mediterranean is a sea in between lands, which today has lost its essence as a threshold: it has passed from inclusion to exclusion. For us it represents the starting point, the great basin from which our culture was born, our way of seeing, feeling, perceiving, living. It is the foundation of a plural culture, where our roots are. Working on the border today – together – means creating connection on a topic that separates. The attempt is to reverse the reading of the Mediterranean, as a cartography in which the routes are more important than the limits. This does not mean denying identity, but activating a reflection to recreate the relationship through distinction: distinguir pour unir.

The work now consists of 11 diptychs composed by photographs of both. Our artistic research is very different from one another and the act of combining two photographs in a single frame space, creating a single artwork, is a way for us to confront ourselves through contemporary art on a current and urgent theme. Our desire is to invite other artists to do the same in order to open up to different reflections and try to make the water liquid again and the boundary as a threshold.

This is the reason why we have decided to work about the vicinities, to break down those political lines that create distance and show the will to build relationships. Creating diptychs with our work for us means to be unite in the differences to strengthen each other, open up to evolve, give value to oneself through comparison with the other. This is what happens to our photos, they get stronger by combining each others, they grow in value. We start from a phase of confrontation and by opening up a space for sharing and working in the same frame, we do in our practice of art what we would like to happen in the Mediterranean.Our will is to continue to work on this issue, exploring other places in the Mediterranean in order to have, us first, a plural point of view on the issue. Moreover we would like to involve other artists asking them to do the same, inviting them to open the dialogue between them and activate a shared reflection, so that the Mediterranean returns to be that place of exchange favorable to the birth of new visions.
